Macron’s nightmare? HALF of French people disapprove of president’s actions, poll finds

The YouGov poll for Huffington Post France and CNews showed that 50 per cent of French people “disapprove” of Mr Macron’s actions as president, just over six months after he gained a landslide victory in the country’s presidential elections.

Thirty-five per cent of respondents said they “approved” of his actions as president, while five per cent refused to answer.

The poll found that conservative prime minister Edouard Philippe is more popular than his boss.

While 43 per cent said they disapproved of Mr Philippe’s actions as premier, 36 per cent said they approved.

The poll also found French people are now more concerned about unemployment than they are about illegal immigration, in a sure sign that Mr Macron’s controversial labour code reform is yet to bear fruit.

Some 24 per cent named unemployment as their top concern, while only 16 per cent named immigration.

Another poll published on Wednesday echoed the YouGov findings.

The Ipsos Sopra-Steria poll for Le Monde found 31 per cent of French people are “dissatisfied” with Mr Macron’s performance as president, while only 23 per cent are “satisfied”.

Nearly half of French people, however, told pollsters that they were “neither satisfied nor dissatisfied” with Mr Macron, confirming that scores remain unimpressed by their president.

In addition, about one in five people – 21 per cent – said that they were “satisfied” with Mr Philippe’s actions as prime minister, while 30 per cent said they were “dissatisfied”.

Close to half – 49 per cent – said that they were “neither satisfied nor dissatisfied” with their right-wing premier.
