The Grand Tour season 2 update brings an entirely new way to watch

Prime Video is finally available on Apple TV in over 100 countries.

The hugely-successful video on-demand service has been unavailable on the latest-generation Apple TV, which first launched in October 2015.

The fourth- and fifth-generation Apple TV hardware is powered by tvOS and has its own designated App Store.

Although a number of streaming services appeared in the Apple TV App Store in the years following its relaunch, Prime Video failed to materialise.

The video on-demand service boasts a number of hugely-successful original series, including Man in the High Castle, Transparent and The Grand Tour.

Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed Prime Video would be making its way to Apple TV at the company’s annual developer conference, WWDC, more than six months ago.

“Amazon is coming to the TV app and all Apple TVs later this year with Amazon Prime Video,” Tim Cook announced.

With only three weeks of 2018 left, Apple and Amazon have finally delivered on that promise.

Previously, Apple TV could beam content from the Prime Video app on iOS using the built-in AirPlay feature.

However, this is much less intuitive than a native application, and requires the viewer to keep an iOS device nearby whenever they want to watch the latest episode of Preacher or Mozart in the Jungle.

“There is nothing that excites us more than delighting our customers, and we are thrilled for them to stream Prime Video on Apple TV,” said Mark Eamer, Vice President of Prime Video.

“The app arrives just in time for the highly anticipated new season of The Grand Tour, which launches on 8th December, and Prime Video members streaming on the Apple TV 4K will have the exceptional viewing experience of 4K HDR.”

The Grand Tour reunites ex-Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.

The trio have shared a number of previews, teasing some of the changes to the formula for the second series, including a new celebrity segment that replaces season one’s Celebrity Brain Crash.

Unlike in season one, when the tent followed Clarkson, Hammond and May around the globe, this year’s studio segments are all being filmed in the Cotswolds – near to Clarkson’s home.

Amazon said the decision was made due to “sore joints, struggling lungs and combined age of 158”.

The move came after a series of health issues which prolonged filming on the new season.

In June, Hammond was airlifted to hospital when his vehicle crashed and burst into flames during filming in Switzerland.

After the incident, Jeremy Clarkson tweeted: “It was the biggest crash I’ve ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly, and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly ok.”

Amazon later released a 30-second trailer which shows Hammond grinning to camera just moments before he lost control of his car.

Hammond later revealed that he “thought he was going to die in the crash”.

“In fact that is what was going through my mind. I thought I’d had it,” he said, explaining that he felt as if he was in “a tumble dryer full of bricks going down a hill”.

“I was aware that I was up, that I was high, that inevitably the car was going to come down”, he said in a video posted on Drivetribe.

He also fell off a motorbike during filming in Mozambique, which landed him in hospital.

A few months later, Clarkson was hospitalised with pneumonia. Filming resumed in September, with producer Andy Wilman confirming that the crew were “playing catch-up like crazy”.

Filming for season two took place in Mozambique, Switzerland, the US and Georgia, near Russia.

While filming in Mozambique, Hammond was knocked unconscious after he fell off a motorbike and hit his head.

Hammond confirmed the accident in a post on DriveTribe.

He wrote: “Thanks for enquiries re my slight shunt whilst filming for GT. I can confirm that yes, I fell off a bike, many times, in fact and yes, I banged my head and everything else. But life goes on.”

Footage of the crash is expected to appear in the new season.

Hammond added: “Can’t tell you more yet about the how and why of it; that’s all for later in the year on the show.”

Fans will need an Amazon Prime subscription, which starts from £5.99 a month or £79 a year.
