Could Patrick Stewart win an OSCAR for Logan? Best Actor nod at 2018 Critics Choice

It’s exciting times for comicbook adaptations.

It’s not kjust that SFX have enabled almost anyting to be realised on screen to bombastic blockbuster effect, some of the darker, edgier storylines have actually made th biggest box office splash.

While the weighty and worthy Justice League labours under poor reviews and a muddled production process, sharper, clearer movies like Logan took $616million worldwide and Deadpool bagged a remarkable $783million (on a $58millionbudget).

Not only that, Logan has received some early awards season buzz after picking up several Critics Choice nominations in major categories.

Fantasy and sci fi movies are used to hoovering up nominations for editing, sound, make-up etc, but rarely get any appreciation in the major acting categories.

Patrick Stewart could change all that after receiving a Best Supporting Actor nomination, alongside Willem Dafoe, Armie Hammer, Richard Jenkins, Sam Rockwell and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Encouragingly, there is no overwhelming favourite and Stewart’s swan song as the dying Professor X was universally praised.

A major award win would thrill fans resigned to award show snubs and be a huge upset to the usual Hollywood tradition.

The Critics Choice Awards are just the start of the three-month season that builds towards the Oscars in February. It will be intriguing to see if Stewart can build on this early accolade.

Logan’s Dafne Keen also picked up a nomination in the Best Young Actor/Actress category, another sign that Logan is being taken seriously by the industry.

The 2017 awards (and Oscars) race is still pretty open, with no clear favourite in most categories.

Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi romance The Shape of Water dominated the Critics Choice announcement with 14 nominations.

Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of Call Me By Your Name and Steven Spielberg’s political drama The Post are also early contenders in many categories.
