Apple TV gets major update with hundreds of new shows and movies now available

Apple TV owners can finally get access to hundreds of new shows and movies via Amazon’s Prime Video app.

Until now the popular app hadn’t been available on Apple TV but this latest update means users of the streaming box can now gain access to all of Amazon’s content.

These shows including The Grand Tour, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Tick along with the upcoming launch of Jean-Claude Van Johnson on 15th December.

Prime Video also offers a wide array of award-winning kids content including Tumble Leaf, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and The Snowy Day as well as popular licensed titles coming to the service every month.

The app has gone live in 100 countries and can be downloaded on the new Apple TV 4K and previous generations of Apple TV.

“Amazon Prime Video is one of the most eagerly anticipated apps to come to Apple TV, so we’re excited to bring all of that great content to customers,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.

“With these exciting updates, plus our growing collection of 4K HDR movies on iTunes, we continue to deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience to Apple customers.”

The Apple TV was recently updated with a new 4K compatible modei now on sale.

Many streaming services, including Netflix and Amazon, have begun featuring 4K but, until now, the Apple TV couldn’t be used to play this top quality format.

Apple says its new TV box offers the highest picture quality ever with unbelievably sharp, crisp images, richer, more true-to-life colours, and far greater detail in both dark and bright scenes.

As well as Netflix and Amazon content being available on the new Apple TV, movies downloaded from iTunes will also now be available in 4K and they will cost the same as the current HD format.

Apple also confirmed that anyone owning movies from iTunes in HD will get them automatically upgraded to 4K for free.

iTunes now offers hundreds of 4K HDR titles at the same price as HD titles.

Recent additions to the 4K HDR iTunes library include all eight “Harry Potter” films and all the “Transformers” movies, and holiday films like “Home Alone,” “The Holiday,” “Jingle All the Way” and “Die Hard” in 4K and “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” in 4K HDR.

The new Apple TV 4K prices start from £179 for 32GB or £199 for 64GB model and you’ll need a £7.99 Amazon Prime subscription to enjoy the shows and movies on the Prime Video app.
