Mark Clattenburg delivers string of revelations to rock Tottenham and Chelsea

Tottenham needed to win at Stamford Bridge in the 2015/16 season to keep Leicester’s hands off the trophy, but they failed.

The north London club threw away a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 as Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard earned the Blues a point.

The game was a hotly contested affair, with referee Mark Clattenburg dishing out 12 yellow cards – nine of which went to Spurs players.

And the former Premier League official has admitted he deliberately went into the match with a “gameplan” not to send players off because he did not want to be blamed for costing Spurs the title.

He said: “I allowed them [Spurs] to self-destruct so all the media, all the people in the world went, ‘Tottenham lost the title’.

“If I sent three players off from Tottenham, what are the headlines? ‘Clattenburg costs Tottenham the title’.

“It was pure theatre that Tottenham self-destructed against Chelsea and Leicester won the title.”

And when asked on NBC podcast Men in Blazers if he had helped to script the match, he added: “I helped the game.

“I certainly benefited the game by my style of refereeing.

“Some referees would have played by the book. Tottenham would have been down to seven or eight players and probably lost.

“They would’ve been looking for an excuse.

“But I didn’t give them an excuse, because my gameplan was, ‘Let them lose the title’.”
