Lewis Hamilton: Mercedes driver made a key decision over the summer – Martin Brundle

That’s the verdict of Sky Sports expert Martin Brundle in the wake of the Brit’s 2017 World Drivers’ Championship win.

Hamilton secured his third title with Mercedes and the fourth of his career at the Mexican Grand Prix last month.

And he did so after winning five of the nine races which came after F1 took its annual summer break in August.

Brundle has now discussed what Hamilton must have done during that hiatus in order to set himself up to beat Sebastian Vettel to the title.

“Outstanding,” Brundle told Sky Sports, when asked to rate Hamilton’s 2017 campaign.

“It’s as if he went away at the summer break and thought: ‘I had better start concentrating on this now’.

“When his mind is in the right place he is unbeatable and he came back from his ‘holidays’ with a vengeance, as did Mercedes.

“He’s a very worthy four-time world champion and a contender in any discussion about all-time greats.”

Hamilton ended the 2017 season on 363 points, 46 more than second-place Vettel.

And he’ll be out to go level with Juan Manuel Fangio on five F1 titles next year.
