BREAKING: Holiday hotspot train crash – Costa del Sol train derails near Seville

The accident happened around 10.20am close to Arahal, near the train’s final destination in Seville.

Initial reports speak of “several people” being injured. It was raining heavily when the accident happened.

Train operator ADIF said there were at least seven casualties and three of the injured were serious.

Emergency services are evacuating the train with the help of a helicopter.

It tweeted: “The service between the stations of El Sorbito and Arahal has been suspended because of a train derailing, caused by adverse meteorologic conditions.” 

It is understood the third carriage on the train was the one that derailed, atthough it is not believed to have overturned.

A local emergency services coordinator confirmed the seven injuries, saying: “Seven people have been injured, three seriously, when a train derailed on the passenger line from Malaga to Seville near the town of Arahal.” 

The helicopter is helping out because road access to the scene of the accident is difficult.

Farmers are also said to be participating in the rescue operation.

The nationalities of those hurt has not yet been revealed.
