North Korea: Russian roadmap NOT ENOUGH to stop Kim Jong-un, South Korean official says

North Korea has been hardening its aggressive rhetoric against its neighbours as the Russian Government demands for Kim Jong-un to “step back from the red line” and “calm down.”

But Mr Moon said Russia’s intervention is not enough to assuage the fears of North Korea starting World War 3 in the region.

He said: “It’s not enough. There should be a new initiative to create and sustain peace in the Korean peninsula.

“The North Koreans know that the military option is always on the table, therefore, putting the military option on the table is not likely to change North Korean behaviour.”

But speaking to RT, the Advisor for Foreign Affairs to South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Russia’s “flexible” proposals could help calm Kim Jong-un ahead of the PyeongChang Olympics scheduled to start in February 2018.

He added: “I think that the proposal is very realistic, flexible.

“With the occasion of the PyeongChang Olympics all the parties concerned, particularly North and South Korea, could come up with a more restraining behaviour.”

Russia’s proposed strategy to resolve the growing tension with North Korea would include an end to US drills with South Korea and direct talks between Pyongyang and Washington D.C.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov said: “There’s absolutely no alternative to dialogue. But in order to start that dialogue, everyone has to stop, take a deep breath and step back from the red line which we’re almost at.”

Seoul and Washington agreed last month to increase rotational deployments of US strategic forces to curb North Korea’s missile threats.

Pyongyang has always denounced military drills as a war rehearsal for an invasion, but the allies assert that it is defensive.

North Korea has been threatening another launch following a series of provocative tests earlier this year.

Japan warned the rogue state could be preparing a new launch after a series of missile tests earlier this year.

An official told news agency Kyodo: “There is a possibility of missiles launches in the next few days.”
