Lewis Hamilton: New contract imminent, reveals Mercedes boss Toto Wolff

Lewis Hamilton has had a stellar season with Mercedes, clinching his fourth world title and delivering the Constructors’ Championship alongside his team-mate Valterri Bottas.

The 32-year-old’s current deal with the German team expires at the end of next season and there were some concerns he had not yet penned an extension.

However, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has allayed fans’ fears and confirmed talks will soon be underway with both drivers.

“We will start those discussions now,” Wolff said after the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“I think it’s pretty obvious that we are the team of choice for Lewis and Lewis is the driver of choice for us.

“We have performed well together and I think we will want to continue for a few more years.”

Wolff also stressed Mercedes saw no “no reason to doubt” an extension not being agreed – a feeling that was shared by Hamilton himself after the race in Abu Dhabi.

“I am really excited about continuing my journey with the team and continuing to improve,” he said after his second-place finish behind Bottas.

Wolff also confirmed talks would be held with Bottas and said renewing his deal would be a “no brainer” if he continued his fine form into the new season.

“It is important to see that he continues what he has done in the first half of the season, what we saw in Brazil and what we have seen here, then it is a no-brainer,” he said.

“We like working with Valtteri, and Lewis, and the two fit well together.

“There is a good dynamic in the team and l see no reason to change it if we continue where we are now.”
