Motherwell 0 – Celtic 2: Dembele and Forrest strikes retain Scottish League Cup for Hoops

Celtic clinched their fourth successive trophy under Brendan Rodgers with a 2-0 win over Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup.

James Forrest opened the scoring for the SPL champions, curling home a low shot following a Callum McGregor assist.

McGregor worked the ball well to Forrest on the edge of the penalty area who took a touch before curling his strike into the far corner to make it 1-0.

At half-time the game was still in the balance but Cedric Kipre’s sending off after the restart cost Motherwell dearly.

It looked harsh as Kipre brushed against the arm of Scott Sinclair, sending the winger tumbling in the box.

But referee Craig Thomson had no doubts and Moussa Dembele stepped up to convert from the spot, sending a confident strike down the middle of the goal.

From that point on it was game over for Motherwell but they came close to snatching a consolation late on with a fine strike from Louis Moult.

He thundered in a free-kick that look destined for the top corner but it smashes back off the post to keep the score at 2-0.

Celtic have now won back-to-back League Cups under Brendan Rodgers.

“I’m delighted to get on the scoresheet. We had a lot of confidence form there on in,” Forest said after the match.

“They started well but we stuck at it and once we got the goal we kicked on.

“Four (trophies) in a row is crazy but we just go on and try to get more.”
