One of the best OnePlus 5T features could be coming to the OnePlus 5 in a future update

.

The iterative update to the OnePlus 5 boasts a new 6.01-inch AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio.

To accommodate this expansive new screen in the same footprint as its predecessor, OnePlus relocated the fingerprint scanner to the back of the device.

OnePlus said the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is not a compromise as the 5T also includes facial recognition, similar to Apple’s Face ID with the .

Facial recognition unlocks the phone in 0.4 seconds but data-sensitive apps, like mobile banking or password managers, won’t work without the fingerprint scanner or correct PIN.

However the facial recognition feature, dubbed Face Unlock, could be coming to other OnePlus hardware in a future software update.

Technology blog XDA Developers unearthed a reference to the feature in a leaked beta for the OnePlus 5.

Since this is an unreleased beta, it’s possible facial recognition is dropped before the software launches.

However there is no reason OnePlus couldn’t bring Face Unlock to the OnePlus 5.

Unlike the iPhone X, which uses a dot projector that emits 30,000 infrared beams onto the face to authenticate the identity of the person holding the smartphone – the OnePlus 5T does not use any specific sensors.

OnePlus is simply leveraging the front-facing selfie camera to identify your face, which is the same camera module used on its predecessor, OnePlus 5.

According to the Chinese smartphone company, it uses over 100 unique identifiers to correctly identify who is looking at the device.

It’s even designed to work with glasses.

OnePlus also says it does everything within its power to ensure the subject looking at the smartphone is alive, building in a number of features to beat selfies from screens.

It says, “In an upcoming update, the phone will understand whether the subject is emitting light (a phone) versus reflecting (your actual face) by analysing shadows and bright areas.

“Other current checks related to this particular scenario is to look for screen reflections, the presence of a square element (shape of the phone) and more.

“We are dedicated to constantly optimising Face Unlock, much like we do with OxygenOS as a whole, and this is but one example.”

OnePlus is currently beta testing an update to Android 8.0 Oreo for the OnePlus, which is where the references to Face Unlock was spotted.

Earlier this month, the Chinese company pushed-out its first .
