Man Utd news: Michael Carrick offered coaching role by Jose Mourinho

Manchester United veteran Michael Carrick has been offered a role as a coach at the end of the season, Jose Mourinho has revealed.

The midfielder is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the current campaign and the Portuguese wants him to hang around.

United’s board agree with Mourinho and have given the green lifght to the 36-year-old.

However, the former Tottenham man wants to play out the remainder of the season before finalising his decision.

“Michael as a person is more important than Michael as a player, so we gave him time to relax, to recover, to feel confident, to make the decision if he wants to play, if he wants to stop,” Mourinho said after United’s 1-0 win over Brighton.

“He knows my coaching staff has a chair for him if he wants, when he wants. The chair is there in the office for him, I want that, the board wants that, the owners want that so Michael is in a comfortable situation.

“His future will be with us, but he wants to be a player until the end of the season and now he feels confident to be back.

“He’s training so that is one more option for us. We need more players so if Michael wants that, I’m happy with that.”

The news comes just days after Carrick revealed he had been absent for the Red Devils due to a heart scare.

In an official statement the midfielder said: “I just want to clear up my situation as I’ve had quite a few people asking if I’m ok and why I haven’t been fit over the last couple of months.

“After feeling strange during the 2nd half of the Burton game in September I underwent a series of tests.

“It turned out to be due to an irregular heart rhythm which has been fully investigated and I had a procedure called a Cardiac Ablation.

“I had to build up training steadily whilst being monitored closely but I feel fine now.

“I would like to reassure everyone that I’m healthy and back training hard with the team.

“I’m building up my fitness and aiming to be back in contention for selection soon.

“Thanks for your support, Michael.”
