Why is Nathan Lyon nicknamed Garry?
Garry, or Gazza, is the nickname of Nathan Lyon.
It was first used by Matthew Wade, who used the phrase almost every time Lyon bowled.
“Garry” is the nickname Lyon loves to be called – and it comes from the AFL legend, now broadcaster, Garry Lyon.
After Wade started shouting ‘nice Gazza’ last year, the phrase began trending on Twitter, t-shirt were made and memes appeared on social media.
“It’s brilliant. I’ve now got little kids and guys older than my dad walking around the streets calling (out) ‘Nice Garry’,” Lyon said. “It’s a little bit different. I’m enjoying it.”
In a Big Bash game last year, Lyon wore spikes with ‘Nice, Garry’ stitched on them.
Why is Tim Paine shouting ‘bowled Gazza’ when Nathan Lyon bowls?
Paine admitted before the match the “nice Garry” words of encouragement won’t come naturally to him – and he said he wouldn’t do it.
Except Paine is and after every ball – give or take a couple – the stump mics are picking it up.
“He (Lyon) is trying to (make me say it). He’s got some deal on the side I think,” Paine laughed ahead of the first Test
“I don’t think I will (say it). It doesn’t come naturally to me — I tried it yesterday.”
Lyon is keen for Paine to get involved and he said: “I sat him down yesterday. He’s working on it. I know he’s been in his room working on it.”
Who is Garry Lyon?
Garry Lyon is a former professional Aussie rules player and was captain of the Melbourne Football Club in the AFL.
Since his retirement, he has been mainly an Australian rules football media personality, featuring on television, radio and in newspapers.
