Martin Scorsese: Top 10 facts about the legendary film director

1. With a record eight nominations for Best Director Academy Awards, Scorsese has received the award only once, for The Departed in 2007.

2. The same year, he appeared in a Time Magazine list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

3. Also in 2007, Scorsese came second in a poll for all-time best director, behind Alfred Hitchcock.

4. Scorsese’s favourite pet dog Zoë (1985-1997) used to sit on his knee while he directed. Zoë also played herself in his The Age Of Innocence (1993).

5. In a Vanity Fair interview in 2010, when asked what was his greatest achievement, Scorsese said: “Putting eardrops in my dog Zoë’s ears.”

6. Scorsese personally tied Ray Liotta’s tie every day on the set of Goodfellas.

7. Scorsese was reported to have a phobia of the number 11, never travelling on November 11 or staying on the 11th floor of a hotel.

8. When one actor was off sick, Scorsese stepped in to play the role of a disturbed passenger in Travis Bickle’s taxi in the 1976 film Taxi Driver.
