The quake’s centre 44 miles (71 km) southwest of San Jose at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 km).
Costa Rica is located on the Ring of Fire, faults lines in the Earth’s crust around the Pacific Ocean, which is a hotspot for earthquake activity.
