10.47am: Trump calls on China to increase pressure on North Korea

Donald Trump has praised Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling him a “good man”, but added that he wants China to ratchet up more pressure on North Korea. 

He also said Russia could have a big impact in reining in the hermit nation.

10.38am: North Korea calls Donald Trump a ‘destroyer’

has accused US President Donald Trump of begging for war on the Korean peninsular, adding that his first trip to Asia showed he was a “destroyer”.

“Trump made his conceived attempt yet again to alienate our people from the government,” the foreign ministry spokesman added.

The comments come after Mr Trump warned the rogue nation on Wednesday not to underestimate the United States as he concluded his visit to South Korea. 

The North Korean spokesman said nothing would deter Pyongyang from pursuing its nuclear weapons programme, Reuters has reported.

10.02am: US and South Korea take part in joint military drills

The United States and South Korea have started a series of joint naval exercises just off the eastern coast South Korea.

The manoeuvres will last four days, according to the Associated Press, and will include three US aircraft carriers: USS Ronald Reagan, the Theodore Roosevelt and the Nimitz.

It will be the first time in a decade that three US carriers are operating together in the western Pacific.

In a leaked letter to members of congress, Lieutenant General Jan-Marc Jouas said even limited military action against North Korea could cause a full-scale war leaving the US “vastly outnumbered by North Korean forces.” 

He urged the US government not to underestimate ’s ability to use nuclear weapons and stressed that an all-out war might not completely destroy Pyongyang’s nuclear capability.
