F1 news: ‘NUCLEAR ROW’ at Brazilian Grand Prix, this is massive – Ted Kravitz

It surrounds the relationship between Italian team Toro Rosso and Renault, who supply their engines.

Toro Rosso released a statement which incensed Renault this week – and they are now exploring the possibility of breaking the contract between the two teams.

If they do, it will leave Toro Rosso with no engine for Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

Toro Rosso has suffered a string of failures in recent races, with both Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley taking grid penalties for Brazil and then hitting further problems right at the start of practice.

Sky Sports reporter Kravitz said: “Don’t we love it when a big story breaks – this is a developing big story. It’s going massive, it’s going near nuclear.

“Renault are now considering withholding engines from Toro Rosso and making them sit out not only the rest of the weekend, with no engines, but also the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“They are so furious they are considering looking at their contract with Toro Rosso and seeing if there’s been any kind of break clause in terms of bringing the name into disrepute.

“What they effectively said, and it’s being taken this way at Renault, is they’ve called into question of Renault as a company.

“It’s like they would effectively give Toro Rosso bits that were breaking deliberately so that Renault could get further up in the constructor’s championship.

“Jerome Stoll, the president of Renault sport, is here furious and Alain Prost is slightly less furious because he’s seen all this before.

“They are seriously considering that there might be a break in the contract. Renault are looking at whether this is so significant they could take the engines away from Toro Rosso

“There are five points between Renault and Toro Rosso in the constructors’ championship – and there’s a $10million dollar between each place.”
