24: Woodwork! Germany have rattled the crossbar, and guess who struck it? Yep, Leroy Sane. The Manchester City winger unleashes a thunderbolt that has Jordan Pickford beaten. Not sure how that didn’t go in!

21: NUTS! Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who frankly looks like a 30-year-old, puts it through Halstenberg’s legs and wins the free-kick. Great to see the Chelsea midfielder enjoying himself on his debut.

18: The Three Lions are looking quite useful going forward. Germany’s defenders look a little wary of Jamie Vardy and that’s allowing Tammy Abraham plenty of space.

15: Well Phil Jones is still on the pitch. I think he might have shaken that pesky injury off. Messy Ozil plays a nice ball over the top to Sane, who can’t quite bring it down.

I can see quite a few Gunners on Twitter saying Ozil looks like a totally different player for Germany.

12: Somewhere in the world Jose Mourinho has a face like thunder. Phil Jones has picked up an early injury but is bravely trying to shake it off.

9: Germany have stirred. Leroy Sane leaves Phil Jones for dead before swivelling and striking into the side-netting. He really is quality.

6: Bloody hell! I don’t want to jinx it lads, but we’re looking good! Eric Dier is pulling the strings in midfield, while Rose and Trippier are causing problems down the flanks. I guess Tottenham are looking good on reflection…

3: Just four more games until Gareth Southgate names his squad for Russia 2018. Certainly a night to impress.

Whoops! Almost a complete disaster in the opening 60 seconds as Harry Maguire almost gifts the ball to Werner, but Pickford was off his line quickly.

Straight after that, Jamie Vardy is released down the left and cuts the ball across goal for Trippier, who slams it into the side-netting.

ENGLAND 0-0 GERMANY

1: After a perfectly-observed minute’s silence and wreaths placed in the centre of the pitch by English and German servicemen, we’re underway! The Three Lions’ second-youngest captain Eric Dier looks nice and fired up. Come on England!!

TWO-MINUTE WARNING

19:58: The lads have emerged from the tunnel on a rather chilly evening in the capital. Predictions? I’m going for a credible 2-1 defeat..

Subs: Walker, Hart, Bertrand, Gomez, Keane, Cork, Young, Rashford, Lingard, Cahill.

Subs: Trapp, Sule, Plattenhardt, Khedira, Wagner, Leno, Stindl, Can, Boateng, Gotze, Brandt, Rudy.

GARETH SOUTHGATE

19:50: Here’s what the England boss wrote in tonight’s programme: “We’re going to be playing two of the best teams in the world this month and that’s the short of challenge we really need, to see where we fit and what we’ll be up against next summer.

“They are two really exciting games and I think they will capture the imagination of the public. We’ll get a really good idea of what we need to work on as a team and also where individuals are in terms of what they’re able to contribute.

“There will be a bit more space to play in but we’ll also be up against better defenders and, without the ball, we’ll have to defend more and answer more difficult questions. This is exactly the challenge that we want.”

£20 TICKETS

19:45: We might just have ourselves a good atmosphere at Wembley tonight. First time for everything I suppose.

The FA were flogging tickets for £20 for adults and £10 for kids.

And it’s worked because I’m told it’s a complete sell out! Thankfully common sense prevails.

STAT BOX

*This is the 32nd meeting between these two countries, with both nations winning 13 games apiece (five draws).

*Germany have scored in 13 of their last 14 international contests with England, only failing to score in their Euro 2000 match, losing 1-0 after an Alan Shearer strike.

*Including the 1966 World Cup final, England have faced Germany at Wembley on 11 previous occasions (W4 D1 L6) – Germany have won the last three in a row, with the most recent meeting coming in November 2013, with Per Mertesacker scoring the only goal.

*Since that loss, England have won 15 of their last 17 games at Wembley (D1 L1), with a current unbeaten run of seven (W6 D1).

BLUE ISN’T THE COLOUR…

19:30: England look unlikely to keep a clean sheet this evening, but it’s got nothing to do with our thread-bare squad.

Research from the boffins at has concluded that the Three Lions concede the most goals when playing in blue.

While England have traditionally worn a red away strip, they have also donned blue, yellow and grey shirts – conceding 0.93 goals-per-game when wearing blue, the worst of their away kit colours.

However, they do have a slightly better win rate of 53% in the current strip, compared to 51% in red, which could bode well against the world champions this evening.

ELSEWHERE TONIGHT

19:25: We’ve got some pretty decent matches going on elsewhere tonight folks.

The most important is obviously Sweden’s World Cup qualifying match with Italy. A World Cup without Italy? It just woudn’t be right.

There’s also friendlies between Wales and France, Belgium vs Mexico and Poland vs Uruguay.

I’ll keep you abreast of everything throughout the night.

NEW BALLS PLEASE…

19:20: Everyone seen the new ball for the 2018 World Cup in Russia?

Some people are getting quite excited because Adidas have ‘reimagined the iconic Telstar football…’

Apparently the Telstar celebrates its 50th birthday next summer having first been seen in the 1968 European Championships.

VAR

19:15: We haven’t even welcomed VAR into our game yet and I’m already bored of it.

The video assistant referee (VAR) system will be in operation for the first time in an official game in the UK during the clash at Wembley, as part of an ongoing trial.

The system sees VARs, watching a game on television screens, being available to review four types of situation: goals, penalty/no penalty decisions, straight red cards, and cases of mistaken identity.

A match between England and Germany seems an apt choice of fixture given the controversies of the 1966 World Cup final and their meeting in the last 16 of the 2010 competition.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Mark: What an awful England team that is!!! F****** hell!

Paul: I’ve just seen the team-sheet… Is it April Fools Day already??

Rhys: Possibly the worst England starting 11 I have ever seen.

I’m sensing that some people aren’t happy with our starting XI tonight. Just a hunch…

GERMANY XI

19:05: And here comes ze German’s starting XI. Ozil, Draxler, Sane and Werner? Oh boy…

Germany XI: Ginter, Hummels, Rudiger – Kimmich, Gundogan, Ozil, Halstenberg, Draxler, Werner, Sane.

Subs: Trapp, Sule, Plattenhardt, Khedira, Wagner, Leno, Stindl, Can, Boateng, Gotze, Brandt, Rudy.

ENGLAND vs GERMANY – TEAM NEWS

19:00: It’s pretty-much as we expected folks. Jordan Pickford, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham are all included in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI, and make their England debuts.

Fingers crossed they can give the absentees something to think about when they return.

Elsewhere Southgate goes with a back three comprising of Phil Jones, Harry Maguire and John Stones with Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier deployed as wing-backs.

Jake Livermore and captain Eric Dier are in the middle with Loftus-Cheek operating just behind Jamie Vardy and Abraham.

ENGLAND XI

18:55: And here’s tonight’s starting XI folks. Youthful look.

England XI: Pickford, Trippier, Rose, Jones, Stones, Maguire, Livermore, Dier, Vardy, Loftus-Cheek, Abraham.

Subs: Walker, Hart, Bertrand, Gomez, Keane, Cork, Young, Rashford, Lingard, Cahill.

POPPY ARMBANDS

18:50: Something that is certain is that all the players, on both sides, will be wearing armbands bearing the image of the poppy in remembrance of members of the armed forces.

FIFA fined England – and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – last year for displaying the poppy as part of the Armistice Day commemorations as it was deemed a political symbol, but there will be no such sanctions this time around following the International Football Association Board’s clarification on the relevant law in September.

Rightly so.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Simon: I don’t know why I’m gonna do it but I know I’ll end up doing it. Inevitably it’s gonna be awful but will still watch.

Phil: So many squad drop-outs, it’s a pointless fixture. Got to be a special kind of muppet to pay £90 to go and watch that! Would’ve been far better for England’s future to play the whole Under-17 World Cup Winning team tonight, see how they do. They’ve got the bottle.

Rachael: England are going to get slaughtered tonight…

Rachael’s clearly optimistic tonight. I think a ‘slaughtering’ would be a good result.

WHO IS AVAILABLE?!

18:35: Ruben Loftus-Cheek, that’s who!

The Chelsea loanee is set to make his England debut tonight.

The 21-year-old midfielder, currently on loan at Crystal Palace, earned his first senior call-up for the upcoming friendlies along with Tammy Abraham and Joe Gomez.

Such are the lack of options that Chelsea’s Jay Dasilva, on loan at Charlton, and Fulham’s Tayo Edun – members of the triumphant European Under-19 squad – trained with the senior squad yesterday.

On Wednesday, Tottenham midfielder Marcus Edwards and Jake Clarke-Salter of Chelsea trained with Southgate’s side.

EVENING

18:30: Did you bring your boots? I’d say there’s a 90% chance you’ll get a game if you pop over to Wembley tonight.

The Three Lions’ World Cup preparations kick-off with back-to-back matches against Germany and Brazil – glamour friendlies they approach without a spate of key players.

Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph, Jordan Henderson and latterly Jack Butland have pulled out of the squad, following the withdrawals of Dele Alli, Harry Winks and Harry Kane.

Anyway, we’ve had an office whip-round and Gareth Southgate has 11 players to take on one of the best teams in the world.

Should be fun…
