North Korea accuses Donald Trump of ‘lighting the fuse for nuclear WAR’

Pyongyang said the visit, as part of Mr Trump’s 12-day tour of Asia, has further aggravating tensions which have already reached boiling point on the Korean Peninsula.

Amid a series of missile launches and threats from North Korea, Mr Trump’s visit to South Korea has been interpreted as an aggressive act by Kim’s regime.

North Korea’s state run daily newspaper Rodong Sinmun said: “Trump has flown to South Korea as he seeks to strengthen military threats against us and has an intention to light the fuse for a nuclear war.

“The problem is that South Korea is blindly following the US which is intent on the scheme for a nuclear war.”

Mr Trump was in Seoul for a two-day visit as part of his five-nation Asia tour.

And during a speech in the South Korean capital Mr Trump directed his words at North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Mr Trump said: “The weapons that you are acquiring are not making you safer, they are putting your regime in grave danger.

“Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face.

“It makes sense for North Korea to come to the table and to make a deal that is good for the people of North Korea and the people of the world.”

However Mr Trump, whose strategy has stressed sanctions and military pressure instead of diplomacy, did not spell out any new approach.

North Korea has made clear it has little interest in negotiations at least until it develops a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the US mainland, something Washington intelligence officials say may be just months away.

It comes after Mr Trump’s plans to make an unannounced visit to the heavily fortified border separating North and South Korea was aborted when dense fog prevented his helicopter from landing.

A visit to the demilitarised zone, despite the Trump administration’s earlier insistence the US President had no plans to go there, could have further inflamed relations with North Korea.

Tensions have heightened on the Korean Peninsula amid the North’s sixth nuclear test and missile testing, and exchanges of bellicose language between Mr Trump and the Kim.

North Korea has not staged provocative acts for more than 50 days since it flew a missile over Japan in mid-September and experts have warned a new missile launch could be imminent.

Mr Trump and his wife Melania have now flown to Beijing for talks with North Korea’s only ally.
