Nintendo Switch news: Forget Wii U, Nintendo portable could dethrone the Wii

is on track to potentially overtake the Wii in terms of sales.

The latest Nintendo console is on course to have outsold the Wii by March 2023 according to market analyst firm Nomura Securities.

According to WSJ reporter Takashi Mochizuki, Nomura expects the Switch to sell 23 million in the next financial year and 115.8 million units by March 2023.

That’s a significant improvement on the Nintendo Wii, which sold just over 100 million units.

While this is currently just a prediction, the Nintendo Switch has been hugely successful since launching earlier this year.

The console is so popular that it could sell more in a year than Wii U sold in its entire lifetime.

And it’s not surprising when you look at the roster of games, which includes Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda Breath of the Wild.

The excellent Super Mario Odyssey has already reached two million sales since launching at the end of October.

1.1 million units have apparently been sold in the US, making Super Mario Odyssey the fastest selling Mario game ever in that region.

It would also make it one of the fastest selling Switch games since the console was launched back in March.

The Legend of Zelda is also hugely popular, and is about to .

During the latest Direct conference, Nintendo announced that Breath of the Wild owners would be able to play a free Xenoblade Chronicles 2 side quest from November 9.

Available as a free update, the quest gives players the chance to unlock a Xenoblade costume for Link.

It’s also a way for Switch owners to familiarise themselves with one of the lesser known Nintendo franchises.

Nintendo explains: “To help familiarise fans with main character Rex before the game launches, a new Side Quest will be available via a free update in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, in which players will be able to obtain a Rex costume for Link.”
