Stan Wawrinka provides injury update after knee surgery: Swiss star is back hitting balls

Wawrinka announced in August that he would take the rest of the season off to deal with a knee injury that had hampered him multiple times during 2017.

“After sitting together with my team and considering all options, I have made the very difficult decision to end my 2017 season as I need to undergo medical intervention on my knee,” said world no 4 Wawrinka.

“This is obviously extremely disappointing, but I’m already looking ahead and planning my recovery.”

And the 32-year-old appears to be ahead of schedule after posting a video of his famous single-handed backhand on Twitter.

“First practice since July!,” he captioned it.

“Sooooo happy and excited!

“Already killing the cones with the backhand!!”

The three-time Grand Slam champion looks well on track for a return to tennis at the end of this year.

Wawrinka is currently scheduled to play in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition in Abu Dhabi in December.

The event will run for just three days from December 28 to 30 and Novak Djokovic, who has been out since July, is also expected to make his comeback after an elbow injury.
