Texas shooting: What we know about Baptist church gunman Devin Kelley

The police are yet to officially confirm the attacker’s identity, only referring to him as a white male in his 20s.

Kelley, 26, was a US Air Force serviceman from 2010-2014, before he was dishonourably discharged and court martialed for assaulting his wife and child.

Last week the attacker appeared to upload a photo to his Facebook account of an AR-15 semiautomatic weapon, the same weapon that was used in Sunday’s attack.

US law bans service people dishonourably discharged from duty from owning a gun, meaning the weapon used by the mass shooter was probably attained illegally.

According to a LinkedIn profile in Kelley’s name, which no longer exists on the website, he also worked teaching Bible school children aged 4-6 in June 2013 to help “their minds grow and prosper”.

Police have said they do not believe he was involved in any terrorist groups.

Dressed all in black, Kelley, who lived 35 miles north of Sutherland Springs in New Braunfels, open fired on a congregation at First Baptist Church who were attending their regular Sunday service.

At least 26 people died from the attack and dozens more were injured, including a five year old boy who has undergone surgery after being shot twice in the stomach, once in his scrotum and once in his arm.

The 14-year-old daughter of the church’s pastor Frank Pomeroy was among those who died.

Mr Pomeroy described his daughter as “very beautiful, special child”.

After being confronted by an armed civilian inside the church Kelley fled the scene in his SUV.

The police found the murderer dead in his car along with multiple weapons and possible explosives.

Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Director Freeman Martin said: “We are not sure if it was self inflicted or if he was shot by a local resident.”

The attacker’s family home has since reportedly been raided by San Antonio police who arrived with bomb squad units.

Police have said the motive of the attack is currently unknown.
