‘ARROGANT AND PRETENTIOUS’ Backlash at ex-golden boy Emmanuel Macron reaches new levels

The poll, conducted by Harris Interactive for the French public national television channel France 2, showed those unhappy with Mr Macron’s performance was now at 59 per cent.

Only 35 per cent of respondents expressed satisfaction with the centrist leader.

The poll also found that just 18 per cent of those who had voted for far-left rebel Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the first round of the spring presidential election were now satisfied with their new leader’s performance, as did 18 per cent of those who said they had voted for right-wing leader Marine Le Pen.

But while 50 per cent of those interviewed said that they trusted Mr Macron to “represent France on the global stage” and “secure the country,” the adjectives most commonly used by respondents to describe him were “arrogant,” “deceiving” and “pretentious”.

In the survey many also referred to him as “the president of the rich”.

This echoed another poll by Elabe published today which showed while 50 per cent of French people think it is still “too early” to judge Mr Macron, 37 per cent disapprove of his job performance.

The poll, which was conducted for the news channel BFM TV, also showed just 12 per cent of French people approve of his actions as president.

The poll also found that 56 per cent of respondents do not think that Mr Macron is “transforming the county,” compared to 43 per cent who think he is.

The majority of French people, however, hold a favourable view of Mr Macron’s conservative prime minister Edouard Philippe, according to an Ifop poll published on Sunday.

The poll for the French weekly Le Journal du Dimanche found 54 per cent of French people are satisfied with Mr Philippe’s performance.

The Ifop poll also found that 85 per cent of respondents think that it is more important for a government minister to be an “expert in their field” than “politically experienced,” compared to 15 per cent who thought the opposite.
