WoW Classic: No Warcraft release date for Blizzard servers, wasn’t inspired by RuneScape

WoW Classic servers are currently being worked on and look to be an intensely difficult project to pull off.

As usual, Blizzard have refused to offer even a rough release date or window for Warcraft Vanilla, which will look to take the game back to basics.

According to the games giant, fans have been asking for such a thing from them for quite sometime.

Some saw the move by the company to shutdown the private vanilla servers earlier this year as an indication they were moving closer to this goal.

But it was only on Friday during the Blizzcon 2017 Opening Ceremony when we finally found out it was possible.

A Classic server option is now in development, with Blizzard quick to point out that they do not known when it will be ready.

All the original equipment to run such a project is gone and a lot of work will be needed to get the balance right on new tech.

But it’s clear that whenever it is ready to go live, there will be plenty of people ready to test it out.

A single Reddit post on the World of Warcraft Classic announcement has already garnered over 4000 comments, mostly talking about how fans weren’t ready to call it quits again with their social lives.

There had been some chatter about recent projects, such as that of Old School RuneScape revivial, having helped Blizzard move along with their own ideas.

However, when we spoke to the Blizzard team on the subject of WoW Classic, they confirmed that similar ideas, such as 2007 Runescape, had not been the direct inspiration.

They’ve been keeping tabs on such an idea for a few years but have been careful not to talk about it, in fears that something could make it non-viable.

It’s hard to guess just how many Warcraft players would stick around to enjoy the vanilla experience following a few weeks, although that is something Blizzard are aware of.

Speaking on the nostalgia value of the new release, J. Allen Brack explained: “Nintendo is a company that comes to mind who have had a lot of success with the NES Classic and Super NES.

“And I can’t think of the amount of times I’ve bought old Link games, so there’s definitely a lot of nostalgia involved in that.

“I also think there will be a percentage of people where that (WoW Classic) will be the best game for them, that’s the community they want to have.

“And that’s okay, but it’s really impossible to predict the amount of people in those brackets and that’s not what’s important.

“What’s important is that we know those brackets exist and this is what they want.”

Brack also confirmed that bringing back the original World of Warcraft experience will not be easy.

“We’ve actually said for a couple of years now that if this was something we could flip the switch on, we would.

“It’s not that we haven’t had the desire, it’s that we haven’t had the technical clarity on how we were going to do it and make it successful.

“The original WoW required a lot of maintenance, and we didn’t want to get into the business of running an old WoW MMO with the old structure and a modern WoW as well.

“But now we have a way of of oading it which we think will make it a great experience.”

There is currently no release date for WoW Classic as of this time.
