Patrice Evra: What really caused Marseille star to KUNG-FU kick supporter

The former Manchester United defender was involved in a heated debate with Marseille’s own supporters before the Europa League match.

And he was caught on camera raising his boot to a supporter in scenes similar to when Cantona ran into the crowd at Selhurst Park 12 years ago.

He was ushered away by his team-mates soon after the incident but he will now face almost certain sanction by UEFA.

According to reporters at the match, Evra had been targeted by a group of Marseille fans prior to kick-off for 30 minutes who then preceded to scale the barriers to confront the players.

And Marseille boss Rudi Garcia confirmed after the match that the the full-back had indeed received taunts, but condemned him for his actions.

“Pat has experience and he must not react, it’s obvious,” Garcia said.

“Patrice is a more than experienced player and we cannot respond to insults so low and so incredible because they come from one of our supporters.”

And Garcia also spoke out against the group of supporters who berated his team.

“He is not a supporter of OM, because you cannot insult your own players, you have to be behind everyone.”

Marseille released a statement after the game stating they had launched an internal investigation.

It read: ”Olympique de Marseille has noted the altercation between an individual and Patrice Evra in the warm-up of players during the match against Guimaraes.

“An internal investigation was carried out to establish all responsible.

“In any case, a professional player must keep his cool in the face of provocations and insults as hard and unjustified as they are.

“Similarly, the club can only condemn by definition any destructive behaviour by a ‘pseudo supporter’ who insults his own players when everyone must instead support his team.”
