Thae Yong-ho, who was North Korea’s deputy ambassador to the United Kingdom, said he left the hermit kingdom because he was treated like a “modern slave”.

Speaking to CNN, Mr Thae explained that Kim Jong-un was under pressure and was forced to show how merciless he was.

He said: “It’s a little bit complicated but mainly I did not want for my sons to live a life like me, which is nothing but a modern slave.”

When asked about some of his family who still live in North Korea, Mr Thae said he is “not quite sure what will happen now”.

Mr Thae explained that was under pressure during parts of his reign as the leader of the state.

He said: “He faced some challenges inside the leadership of North Korea.

“That’s why Kim Jong-un decided to show he is a man with mercilessness – so that everyone should be frightened about him.”

Mr Thae finished by insisting that his sons were happy with his decision to defect from North Korea.

“When they heard my decision then they were very happy, and they really appreciated that I decided to let them free,” he said.
