However, since iOS 11.1 became available on Wednesday Twitter users have been reporting seeing a mysterious black box with a question mark emoji.
Streams of Apple fans have posted on the social networking site about the question mark, wondering why they black emoji box is appearing.
Users of iOS devices have reported seeing the question mark emoji appearing in SMS messages and also on Twitter.
However, there is a perfectly good explanation for this – and an easy fix.
The new addition emoji additions have been made possible by iOS 11.1’s support for Unicode 10.0, the specification that governs new emoji design.
However those who have yet to update their iOS devices will not be able to see any of these new emojis.
Instead, those using Apple devices running a version of iOS older than 11.1 will be confronted by a small black box with a question mark at its centre.
This signifies that the character used in the text message, tweet, or Facebook post, is not currently available on your device.
Express.co.uk tested this out – an iPhone running iOS 11.1 sent a selection of new emojis to a device running an older version of iOS 11.
The new emojis appeared fine in the iPhone running the most recent version of iOS, but the phone running the out-of-date software saw the black question mark emoji instead.
To be able to see the new emoji, you’ll need to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.
Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update to install the new software.
Apple’s iOS 11.1 update also brings with it one absolutely essential feature.
Apple have confirmed that iOS 11.1 fixes the KRACK attack security risk.
The vulnerability, exposed earlier this month, affects any smart device that uses Wi-Fi, cyber security experts said.
The KRACK exploit affects the WPA2 security protocol, a standard for Wi-Fi security used on almost every Wi-Fi router.
In theory it allows a hacker within range of a Wi-Fi network to read passwords, credit card numbers and photos sent over the internet.
The iOS 11.1 update fixes this vulnerability for Apple mobile devices.
