The testimony states that 29million people were served 80,000 posts linked to Russian actors

The newly released figures will be discussed later today by Facebook counsel Colin Stretch in front of Congress who will condemn the interference from Russia.

Mr Stretch will say: “The foreign interference we saw is reprehensible and outrageous and opened a new battleground for our company, our industry and our society.

“That foreign actors, hiding behind fake accounts, abused our platform and other internet services to try to sow division and discord — and to try to undermine our election process — is an assault on democracy, and it violates all of our values.”

The testimonial, as seen by Independent, also says: “Many of the ads and posts we’ve seen so far are deeply disturbing — seemingly intended to amplify societal divisions and pit groups of people against each other.

“They would be controversial even if they came from authentic accounts in the United States.

“But coming from foreign actors using fake accounts they are simply unacceptable.”

Congress has also summoned executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google to testify as further investigations of Russia’s interference commence.

The testimony states that 29million people were served 80,000 posts linked to Russian actors between January 2015 and August 2017.

Users liking, sharing and commenting on the meddling posts were responsible for distribution to a further 97million people.

Facebook will also state that it deleted 170 Instagram accounts that delivered an additional 120,000 posts – the details of exactly how many were reached through the picture-focused platform has not been disclosed.

Mark Zuckerberg’s social media network has already announced that it found thousands of adverts purchased by Russian-linked fake accounts of which over 3,000 were turned over to Congress.

The ads purchased by the Kremlin-linked Internet Research Agency delivered content to 10million people.

The testimony will lay out future plans for the social network to combat Russian meddling.

The New York Times reported that Google will state that it has found 18 channels “likely associated” with Russia that delivered content to the hugely popular video platform YouTube.

The Alphabet owned company released a statement yesterday claiming it found $4,700 (£3,561) spent in Russian-linked ads during the 2016 election cycle.

The accounts allegedly uploaded more than 1,100 videos between 2015 and 2017, according to The Times.

Twitter has also fallen victim to Russian meddling with the company finding 2,752 accounts linked to Russian operatives.

Executives for all three companies will appear before a congressional committee this week to discuss the issue.

President Donald Trump has previously downplayed the significance of Russian interference

Twitter suspended every account that it tracked to Russia’s Internet Research Agency and has provided US congressional investigators with the account names.

The social network said: “State-sanctioned manipulation of elections by sophisticated foreign actors is a new challenge for us – and one that we are determined to meet.”

President Donald Trump has previously downplayed the significance of Russian interference on social media networks during the election period.

Twitter has also fallen victim to Russian meddling

Speaking about the purchasing of fake adverts, Trump tweeted: “Keep hearing about ‘tiny’ amount of money spent on Facebook ads. What about the billions of dollars of Fake News on CNN, ABC, NBC & CBS?.”

The Russian government has denied any involvement in attempts to sway the US election.

The testimony from Mr Stretch will take place at 18:30pm GMT (2:30PM ET) today.
