New York terror: Is this the Manhattan attacker? Eight dead after truck mows down crowd

Authorities in New York have confirmed the 29-year-old man who carried out the terror attack that left eight people dead was a 29-year-old male who was shot in the abdomen.

He was armed with a paintball gun and pellets.

However police authorities refused to give out any further information about the assailant.

They also declined to reveal which hospital the man was being treated in.

“Many” people were injured in the attack, with possibly 12 people needing medical attention.

The unnamed man drove a pickup truck down the wrong way down a cycle path in a “cowardly” terror attack in downtown Manhattan.

New York City Police confirmed the truck, which appears to be a Home Depot rental van, drove onto a pedestrian and cycle path alongside the West Side Highway at full speed, hitting several people.

The truck then hit a school bus, which was carrying two adults and two children.

4 News reported the driver then allegedly screamed ‘Allahu Akbar’ and got out of the vehicle.

This has not been confirmed by authorities, although the NYPD commissioner said the statement made by the attacker when he exited the vehicle was “consistent” with a terrorist attack.

The assailant was shot in the abdomen at around 3pm local time on Tuesday afternoon which were later revealed to be from a uniformed police officer as he took down the attacker.

The man has been taken to a local hospital.
