‘We’re tired of FACELESS bureaucrats!’ Scottish MEP slaps down ‘controlling’ EU puppeteers

Mr Coburn blasted the European Union for the current chaotic unravelling of Catalonia’s independence battle for independence.

Speaking to RT UK, Mr Coburn said: “I think it’s basically because of the European Union. People don’t want to be ruled by a faceless bunch of people in Brussels.

“They think the decisions they don’t like are being made in Madrid. They’re not made in Madrid, they are made in Brussels! Madrid does as Brussels tells them. The European Union has brought this to a head. And it’s not just Spain.”

The Scottish MEP said Brussels’ approach to international politics had sparked unrest in other parts of the European Union seeking to break off from their central governments.

Mr Coburn continued: “We’ve got the same problem with the Basques, the Flemish in Belgium, various parts of Europe have problems. People want to secede because they don’t want to be ruled by faceless bureaucrats in Brussels.

“They want to make their own decisions locally and then have a national government as well. Perhaps a different way of dealing with national governments.

“The European Union has created a lot of problems: economically with the euro, decision-making being taken away out of people’s hands, people cannot get a hold of representatives by the scruff of the neck and throw them out once every five years.

“People are disheartened by central governments of large European states because they are not doing what they’re supposed to do.”

Catalonia’s quest for independence could spark a domino effect throughout those European regions where separatist feelings are growing stronger.

EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker admitted “cracks” have begun to appear in the European Union after the Spanish region declared independence in late October.

Nationalists in the Basque Country have wanted political unity for all Basque-speaking people in France and Spain since the 19th century.

The Italian regions of Veneto and Lombardy held a referendum to demand more autonomy from the central government in Rome.

And the Orkney Islands have been seeking independence from Scotland and the UK in the aftermath of Brexit.

Orkney has traditionally been against Scottish independence and prefers Westminster rule to Holyrood.
