WATCH: Catalonia minister applauded as he shows up for work – DEFYING Madrid’s orders

This is the moment Catalan minister Josep Rull Andreu was escorted out of his office after Madrid regained control of Catalonia.

Mr Rull arrived at his office despite orders from Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy disbanding the Catalan Government following the region’s declaration of independence.

Footage shows the politician being escorted out of the Barcelona headquarters of the Generalitat de Catalunya amid the applause of the crowd

Mr Rull announced his arrival at the office with a Twitter post, saying: “In the office, exercising the responsibilities entrusted to us by the people of Catalonia.”

According to local newspaper La Vanguardia, two members of the Catalan police force caught up with Mr Rull to inform him he could be arrested for “usurping his functions.”?

Catalan leader Carles Piugdemont also seemingly defied Madrid’s orders posting a picture taken inside the Palau de la Generalitat in Barcelona.

Reports suggest Mr Puigdemont sought refuge in Belgium after Spanish Attorney General Jose Manuel Maza filed charges against him citing crimes of rebellion, sedition and embezzlement.

Should Mr Puigdemont be found guilty he could face up to 30 years in jail.

Mr Maza said: “The Finance Ministry, in order to promote justice, is liable for crimes of rebellion, sedition and embezzlement crimes against those responsible for the parliament.”

The move comes as part of the continuation of a crackdown by the central government in Madrid after the north-east region held an independence referendum on becoming independent in early October.

In a bid to stop the rebellion Mr Rajoy triggered Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution allowing Madrid to seize complete control over the semi-autonomous region.
