Super Mario Odyssey UPDATE – Shock review gives Nintendo Switch game stunning verdict

Super Mario Odyssey is out now on the , with the gaming icon’s latest adventure destined to be seen as an all-time classic.

Reviews have been pouring in for Super Mario Odyssey since its release on Friday, with the game holding a hugely impressive 97 Metacritic rating.

It means Super Mario Odyssey is currently the joint best reviewed game of 2017, alongside The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

That achievement also means the Nintendo Switch is now home to the two most critically acclaimed games of the year.

Super Mario Odyssey has received a perfect 10 from a number of leading games publications, such as EDGE, IGN and GameSpot.

And there is one review for Super Mario Odyssey that has emerged, which shows just how good the Nintendo Switch exclusive is.

The Irish Independent got their hands on Super Mario Odyssey, and put the 3D platformer through its paces.

But having played the “delightful” game which is the “greatest” Mario game ever, they realised a five out of five rating would not do it justice.

So they awarded Super Mario Odyssey an unprecedented 6/5 rating.

In their review, they wrote: “What defines SMO most is the element of surprise — you’re never far from a laugh-out-loud sight gag, a cheekily hidden secret, rib-tickling encounter or wacky costume change.

“The open-world design of the colourful levels, each with a catchy theme tune, enables the game to tease you endlessly with the promise of something delightful and new.

“Oh Nintendo, you spoil us. Six stars out of five. It’s that good.”

The 6/5 verdict for Super Mario Odyssey is slightly playful, but just underlines how good the Nintendo Switch exclusive is.

The rave reviews for Super Mario Odyssey continues what has been a remarkable year for Nintendo, and an impressive turnaround.

After the huge success of the Wii, the Wii U unfortunately failed to live up to its predecessor in commercial success.

While the Wii is one of the most successful consoles of all-time, selling 101.15 million units, the Wii U sold just 13.56million units in comparison.

But Nintendo has bounced back extremely well, captivating gamers’ imagination once again with the Switch.

Between its launch on March 3 and the end of June, the Switch sold an hugely impressive 4.7million units worldwide.

That’s almost a third of what the Wii U sold in its entire LIFETIME, and this was despite widespread stock shortages.

And the release of Super Mario Odyssey shows the good times keep rolling on for Nintendo in what has been a vintage year for them.

Super Mario Odyssey sees the iconic Italian plumber travel across vast worlds as he tries to rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser once again.

Mario’s nemesis has kidnapped Peach and is planning to marry her, and it’s up to our hero and his new partner Cappy to stop the nefarious Koopa King.

The latest entry in the beloved Mario series is seen by many as the true successor to the 3D platforming action of Super Mario 64.

The Nintendo 64 classic is widely regarded as one of the best games of all-time.

And it looks like Super Mario Odyssey could surpass the influential N64 masterpiece and end up going down as one of the greatest games of all time.
