Wolfenstein 2 review round-up – Can PS4, Xbox One shooter rise above packed release date?

Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus marks another ID Software classic that Bethesda has brought to the new generation of , and PC fans.

Bethesda began their reboot of the Wolfenstein series with The New Order back in 2014, which was quickly followed by The Old Blood in 2015.

Wolfenstein 2 is the sequel to 2014’s The New Order, and sees players once again step into the shoes of American spy and super soldier B.J. Blazkowicz.

He’s on a one man mission once again against the Nazis, this time in 1961 in an alternative timeline where the Germans won the Second World War.

Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus has its release date on what is one of the most packed pop-culture days in recent memory.

Wolfenstein 2 will be vying for gamers attention alongside Super Mario Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Plus, Netflix will also be releasing the highly anticipated second season of Stranger Things.

So there are plenty of things all coming this Friday vying for people’s attention.

But despite this packed schedule, the critics’ verdict is Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus is very deserving of your time.

Express.co.uk has rounded up some of the Wolfenstein 2 reviews to give you an idea of what to expect from Bethesda’s latest hit.

Wolfenstein 2 review – Polygon – 9/10: “B.J. is comfortable killing thousands upon thousands of his enemies if they stand between him and a bit of peace.

“But killing isn’t all that Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus offers.

“It’s the rare first-person shooter that explores the first time its hero pulled a trigger; it’s the rare first-person shooter that is comfortable connecting with the primal, untamed parts of your brain while celebrating just how f****** good it feels to lay out a Nazi.”

Wolfenstein 2 review – PCGamer – 81/100: “I’m still won over by Wolfenstein 2’s variety and gunplay, though, and even if it doesn’t feel as fresh to me as The New Order did in 2014, I love the escalating firefights that play out in its various mini sandboxes.

“I appreciate that you can find singleplayer games like this in 2017, where there’s so much attention paid to details like characterisation, sound design and facial animation, on top of how wonderful the guns feel. The New Colossus is fun and funny—a decent successor that’s not just more of the same.”

Wolfenstein 2 review – PCGamesN – 9/10: “If you want a good shooter, play Wolfenstein 2. If you want an incredible single-player story, play Wolfenstein 2. There will be a third Wolfenstein.

“Quite how MachineGames will ever top the second, I do not know.”

Wolfenstein 2 review – Game Revolution – 4/5: “Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus wraps up the feeling of a blockbuster movie in something you can interact with.

“There’s a lot of games that do that, but the spectacle here is outstanding, and the fast-paced gunplay and compelling main story made me want more when the credits rolled. Killing Nazis is one of the most fun and wholesome things a person can do, and there’s no better way than to do it with Wolfenstein 2.”

Wolfenstein 2 review – Twinfinite – 4.5/5: “Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a fluid, brutal, and challenging first-person shooter and one that is insane and over-the-top from start to finish, but it is the unique cast of characters and the story they’re a part of that shines.

“B.J and his crew of revolutionaries add heart and humor to the otherwise bleak world and help create some of the most memorable moments in single-player focused games this year.

“Machine Games has built on what made The New Order great to produce one of this generation’s finest shooters.”
