Dylan Hartley is ‘targeted’: Northampton slam Euro chiefs after England skipper is cleared

Hartley is free to play in the autumn internationals after having his latest citing dismissed yesterday but prop Joe Marler was banned until November 19 and will miss Tests against Argentina and Australia.

Wasps No 8 Nathan Hughes can play in the three Tests after receiving just a two-week ban for a reckless challenge on Harlequins fly-half Marcus Smith.

Hartley, 31, escaped a ban when yellow card from Northampton’s 24-7 Champions Cup defeat in Clermont was not upgraded.

The hooker, who has served 60 weeks of bans since 2007, was sin-binned for a reckless clear-out on Clermont prop Rabah Slimani.

Northampton director of rugby Jim Mallinder said: “The decision to cite Dylan was unjustified. This was a run-of-the-mill incident during a high-intensity game of European rugby.

“Citings like this do beg the question of whether Dylan is being singled out for what has happened in the past rather than being judged solely on Saturday’s game.

“Anyone who watched the game could see that this was completely accidental – a misjudgment at a clear-out, plain and simple.

“When we should be preparing for a crucial league game against Wasps this Saturday, we have instead been distracted by what we believe was an unwarranted judicial hearing.”

If found guilty, Hartley – whose challenge left France international Slimani with a bloody nose but was ruled to be accidental – would have been banned for between two and four weeks, which would have put Saracens hooker Jamie George in pole position to start in the No2 role for England.

But Hartley is now expected to be retained as captain by head coach Eddie Jones when he names his squad today for the three-Test autumn series that starts on November 11.

Marler’s suspension means Jones will have to find another loosehead prop for the games, with Leicester’s Ellis Genge leading the race to be understudy to Mako Vunipola.

Marler, was cited for elbowing Wasps’ lock Will Rowlands in the Harlequins 41-10 Champions Cup defeat at Coventry on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was yellow-carded by referee Mathieu Raynal but the disciplinary committee decided that he should have been given a red even though they believed  Marler used his arm rather than his elbow.

Marler was handed a four-week ban but had a week knocked off for pleading guilty and expressing remorse and can appeal the decision.

The board suspended him until November 19 after taking into account his likely playing commitments and knowing Marler was set to play the weekend after next.

The Harlequin started every game of the last Six Nations and went on the Lions tour to New Zealand without playing a Test.

The reprieve for Hughes, who was cited even though he was not carded, saves Jones a huge headache at No 8.

With Billy Vunipola injured there was no obvious stand-in.
