Aston Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia: Everything you need to know about the goal machine

Kodjia, 28, has been lethal in front of goal since arriving in England in 2015, when Bristol City snapped him up from French club Angers.

He scored 18 goals in his only campaign for the Robins, finishing fourth in the Championship scoring charts.

Kodjia’s form prompted Villa, recently relegated from the Premier League, to sign him on a four-year deal for a fee that could reach £15m.

He scored 19 goals in his first season for Villa, who suffered a disappointing campaign back in the second-tier of English football.

The high point was being named the Championship player of the month for November.

But Kodjia suffered a broken ankle in May which ruled him out of Villa’s final game before an an injury setback in pre-season meant he missed the start of the current campaign.

He made his return in a goalless draw against on September 12.

The Ivorian has only scored one goal in seven appearances this term but he puts his form down to a lack of fitness.

He said: “My first games after being out have been a little difficult because I need the gym for recovery, for stability and for my dribbling and speed.

“I feel good and I just want to score more to help the team.”

However, Villa boss Steve Bruce fears it could be another month or two until Kodjia is back to his best.

“It is going to take time and confidence. He has had a nasty injury,” Bruce said. “I always think that however long you are out, it takes you that long again to get back to where you should be.

“I don’t think we will see the best of Jimmy until November, December time. I do believe, having watched people, you don’t get back to those levels, until you have been back for the same time as you were out.”

Kodjia has not scored against – he failed to fire in last season’s 1–1 draw at St Andrew’s while suspension ruled him out of the Villa Park fixture.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game, he said: “It’s a very important game

“The whole city waits for the game and the team need to be ready.”
