Thor Ragnarok: Taika Waititi WON’T direct Star Wars ‘It’s determinedly SELF-SERIOUS’

The 42-year-old Kiki is known for the improvised comedy of his indie hits like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Having now entered the world of blockbusters with Thor Ragnarok, movie fans are wondering if he would consider directing an upcoming Star Wars spin-off.

Speaking with the New York Times, Taika essentially ruled himself out, but appeared committed to more Marvel films.

The filmmaker said: “That particular franchise seems really hard. There’s not much room for someone like me.”

Taika continued: “Through its narrow canon, the tone of Star Wars has always been determinedly self-serious, whereas the Marvel movies, like the decades of comics they sprang from, veer wildly from high drama to low comedy.

“And improvisation has been a tool in every Marvel movie since Robert Downey Jr. riffed his way through Iron Man.”

Following the dismissal of Star Wars Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow and Han Solo movie’s Chris Miller and Phil Lord, Taika was asked on Twitter if he would consider making a movie for the franchise.

He wrote: “Lolz. I like to complete my films. I’d be fired within a week.”

The producer said: “I would love, love, love to work with Taika again and I have every confidence that we will.”

Thor Ragnarok is released in UK cinemas on October 24, 2017.
