Spain tells Catalonia to IGNORE rebel leaders as Madrid imposes direct rule

He said regional authorities would be acting like “a group of rebels” if they continue to give orders after direct rule is imposed, as they wouldn’t have any legal authority over the region.

He said: ”I hope everyone will disregard whatever instructions they will be planning to give.”

Adding that he hoped “everything will be fine” once the regional police force, the Mossos, will be put under Madrid control.

The Foreign Minister did say there was a legal way for Catalonia to break away from Spain, but added: “We have to study and work through the possible amendments of the constitution.

“This is a matter to be decided by the whole of the Spanish people.

“A part cannot decide for the whole.”

This morning on BBC radio Catalonia Foreign affairs spokesman said no one but the Catalan people has the right to change Catalan institutions, and declared that regional officials will follow the will of the Catalan people, not orders from Madrid.

He added that EU democracy will not be credible if it allows Spain to impose direct role from Madrid.

He also said that all institutions, including police, need to follow instructions from democratically elected Catalan institutions

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that Madrid will invoke Article 155 of the constitution.

Madrid will dismiss the Catalan government and take over all powers in the autonomous region, curb the power of the Catalan parliament and call a regional election within six months.

Carme Forcadell, leader of the regional parliament, slammed Madrid, saying: “Rajoy has announced a de facto coup d’etat against the Catalan institutions.”

As she spoke, hundreds of thousands of people protested in Barcelona against the arrest of the leaders of the two largest pro-independence civil groups, Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sànchez.

Mr Dastis promised that Catalonia leaders would not be arrested, but didn’t outline what would happen is Catalan President Calres Pugdemont refuses to leave his post.

Mr Dastis said: “We are not going to arrest anyone.

“All the government is trying to do, reluctantly, is reinstate the legal order, restore the constitution, but also the Catalan rules.”
