World superpowers bear down on Kim Jong-un to demand North Korea disarm nuclear weapons

South Korea’s main nuclear representative, Lee Do-hoon met with Trump’s North Korea policy chief Joseph Yun to discuss how to deal with North Korea’s nuclear program.

In a statement, South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “The envoys shared the need to seek cooperation with major partners based on a close Seoul-Washington alliance.

“In particular, they agreed to beef up efforts to elicit constructive roles by China and Russia.”

The two also discussed ways to handle the nuclear standoff through diplomacy.

The meeting came ahead of Trump’s visit to South Korea and Japan at the beginning of November.

Yun said: “For Washington, being together and being well coordinated with Seoul is our No. 1 priority.

”There are many occasions for our leaders to engage with each other to coordinate our positions to have a very solid and joint approach as we go forward.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, urged world powers to back efforts by Russia and China as they attempt to settle the crisis over North Korea’s weapons programme.

He said: “The main task at the current stage is to prevent a military conflict which will inevitably lead to a large-scale humanitarian, economic and ecological catastrophe.”

Pyongyang however does not plan to hold any talks with Washington over its nuclear programmes according to senior North Korean diplomat, Choe Son-hui.

Choe Son-hui declared that possessing nuclear weapons was a matter of life and death for North Korea.

He said: “The current situation deepens our understanding that we need nuclear weapons to repel a potential attack.

“We will respond to fire with fire.”

Tensions have heavily increased after Kim Jong-un launched a series of missile tests.

The growth of the Hermit Kingdom’s military wong led Donald Trump to threaten to “totally destroy” North Korea, describing Kim as “little rocket man.”

Choe added that Pyongyang and Kim Jong-un would regard any attempts to restrain the country through UN Security Council sanctions as an attempt “to declare war”.
