Man Utd news: Graeme Souness cannot understand one thing about Jose Mourinho

Mourinho was heavy criticism for his defensive tactics in United’s 0-0 draw against Liverpool last time out.

The performance drew parallels to last season’s corresponding fixture when the United boss was accused of ‘parking the bus’ as United frustrated Liverpool’s offence.

But the Red Devils went into the match having not lost any of their opening 12 matches in all competitions while Liverpool were on a run of just one win in their previous seven games.

All the confidence seemed to be with United going into the fixture with Sadio Mane being ruled out with a long-term injury.

And former Liverpool star Souness was perplexed to see Mourinho revert back to his defensive tactics and doesn’t understand how he would try and get the message across to his superstars.

“There’s one thing I don’t get,” Souness told the Daily Mail.

“I don’t know how Jose Mourinho gets that message across to his players. You know the one I mean.

“At the final against Ajax; at Anfield last week. ‘We’re not good enough to take them on in a game of football. So we’re going to go long and stay behind the ball’.

“I don’t know how you say that to players — because when I played at Liverpool, it was the opposite. We were made to feel unbeatable.”

United return to Premier League action later today when they travel to Huddersfield (3pm).
