Orionids 2017: Best time to watch the Orionid Meteor Shower – video explains all

The Orionid Meteor Shower will fill the sky with shooting stars, peaking in the early morning hours between Friday October 20 and Sunday October 22.

The showers have been described by Nasa as “one of the most beautiful showers of the year”.

AccuWeather explained the best way to watch the meteor shower as they dash across the night sky.

In the footage, AccuWeather say: “The Orionids’ peak will kick off the beginning of this weekend.

“The best time to view the shower is after midnight and before dawn.

The Orionid Meteor Shower will deliver around 10 to 20 meters per hour originating from one the constellation of Orion

AccuWeather adds: “The meteors are remnants left behind by Halley’s Comet. Its last visit was in 1986. The comet will not return until 2061.

Individual meteors have already been pushing across the night sky from October 15 and should remain visible until October 29.

Nasa’s Jane Houston Jones said: “The Orionids peak on October 20, a dark, moonless night.

“Look near Orion’s club in the hours before dawn and you may see up to 10 to 15 meteors per hour.”

The Orionids will be visible anywhere from Earth but the best time for skywatchers to head outside is usually around 2am when the shower is at its most intense.

You do not need a telescope to view the spectacular shooting stars, which can be seen with the naked eye, but Ms Houston Jones did suggest using binoculars.

She said: “Use binoculars to look for bright asteroid 7 Iris in the constellation Aries. Newbies to astronomy should be able to spot this magnitude 6.9 asteroid even from the city.”
