Manchester United fans must accept Jose Mourinho’s tactics – Hargreaves

Mourinho’s Manchester United have come under criticism in recent days for their lack of attacking intent.

The boss set his side up to earn a 0-0 draw at Liverpool in the Premier League last weekend.

And on Wednesday night United pinched a 1-0 Champions League win at Benfica courtesy of a mistake from the hosts’ goalkeeper.

United remain unbeaten this season, however, which is in stark contrast to how the club fared under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

They struggled for results alongside bad performances.

And former Old Trafford midfielder and BT Sport pundit Hargreaves has warned Mourinho will not sacrifice league points in order to entertain.

“Moyes and Van Gaal didn’t get results but Mourinho in a short spell has,” Hargreaves told Express Sport.

“He’s got the Europa League, won the EFL Cup and secured Champions League football. He finds a way to get results in crucial moments.

“Over a long period and especially when you loo at City playing that breathtaking attacking football, over a long season of course people start asking questions, especially with the amount of money they spent.

“But if he finds a way to win (then he can justify it).

“Just look at the Europa League final. That’s a great example of Mourinho. That young Ajax team has 65 per cent possession in that game.

“Times have changed from saying United are an all-out attacking team. They don’t blow teams away.

“Mourinho has his own philosophy and ideas. Everyone would love it, even the players, if it was a little bit more expansive.

“But if in the end it gets results fans will take it and accept it.

“Moyes and Van Gall, they didn’t get results, which is why they’re not there.”

play Huddersfield on Saturday (3pm) and fans will hope they revert to their free-scoring selves witnessed at the start of the season.
