US army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl pleads guilty to desertion and misbehaviour

The American, 31, is charged with endangering his comrades by walking away from a remote post in Afghanistan in 2009.

At his trial, in Fort Bragg, he told the judge that he now understands that what he did caused others to search for him.

His guilty pleas brings the highly politicized saga closer to an end eight years after Mr Bergdahl’s disappearance in Afghanistan.

His actions set off search missions by scores of his fellow service members.
