eBay: £1 coin worth £15,000 – do YOU have one of these rare pound coins worth a mint?

The old pound coin deadline is looming, and the coins will cease to be legal currency tomorrow night at midnight. However, some old pound coins could be worth quite a sum of money.

Britons have been scratching their heads about what to do with their old pounds, and some could be worth keeping, inlcuding the capital cities pound coins.

Maritn Lewis, a Money Saving Expert, has also advised Briton as to what they should do with the old pounds

Pound coins go on sale on sites like eBay for much more than face value, and this £1 is no exception – as it is being advertised for a whopping £15,000.

The old pound coin expires tomorrow night, but keeping this rare version could save you some money.

The coin has an unusual design that many Britons won’t recognise because the piece is actually a Gibraltan £1 coin.

The coin was issued in the British teritory next to Spain in 1997.

This is the third general issue of the coin, which has an image of Elizabeth II on one side, and a image of a skull on the other.

It commemorates the discovery of a Neanderthal skull found at Forbes’ Quarry in Gibraltar in 1848, known as Gibraltar 1.

The image was designed by Philip Nathan, and the coin has “DISCOVERY OF NEANDERTHAL SKULL IN GIBRALTAR 1848” written beneath the skull.

Gibraltar coins a denominated in “pounds sterling”, they are not legal currency in the UK.

So if you find one of these coins it may be worth attempting to sell it, as you can’t spend in it Britain.

Another rare coin is a 50p, which is is selling for £3,500 on the UK auction site eBay.

The 50p, described as “very rare” on the listing, was designed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language. 

Old pound coins with errors can also sell for a huge sum on the site.

A pound coin with a mis-strike error is selling for £2,000.

New pound coins with holes in, or errors, could also fetch you quite a sum.
