BREAKING: Spanish embassy in Athens STORMED by group furious at ‘Catalonia oppression’

Police have reportedly detained 19 people after they barged in to the embassy, which is near the Acropolis in the centre of Athens.

The assailants are believed to be part of the Rouvikonas anti-establishment group.

A message posted on the Athens Indymedia website before the embassy raid at 10am this morning said the group were acting in solidarity with “the oppressed people of Catolonia.”

The anarchist group hung banners from the roof of the embassy building which read: “Solidarity is the weapon of the people. They shall not pass”.

According to the Kathimerini newspaper, damage has been caused to the embassy but there are no reports of any injures.

On Tuesday, Catalan President Carles Puigdemont signed a declaration of independence from Spain, following a controversial referendum on October 1.
