Star Wars 8 trailer fails to save Monday Night Football ratings from hitting season low

ESPN’s coverage of the Bears vs Vikings achieved a 7.0 rating in metered markets, down 17% week-on-week.

It’s also a season low for the broadcast – although the Star Wars trailer did make a noticeable fleeting difference.

Deadline reports that the game peaked with an 8.3 rating during the 15-minute window that the new footage launched, before falling off a cliff shortly afterwards.

Football fans had been complaining online about how dry the match was, with many presumably switching off.

In terms of online engagement, the trailer has – as expected – been big.

On YouTube the Star Wars 8 trailer is No1 on Trending and has scored over 10 million views at time of writing.

Over on Facebook it’s already on 17 million, and on Twitter it’s had a hefty 162,000 Retweets and 209,000 Likes.

The reception is positive, too: on YouTube there are 360,000 Likes to just 9,000 Dislikes.

The Last Jedi trailer shows much more of our central heroes, including Rey (Daisy Ridley), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Finn (John Boyega).

There’s also a heavy presence of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), a glimpse of Snoke (Andy Serkis) and a heart-stopping look at General Leia (Carrie Fisher).

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on December 14 in the UK.
