6.40am: State of emergency declared

California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency for Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties, part of California’s famous ‘wine country’.

Reports say the region has been engulfed in thick, billowing smoke that drifted south into the San Francisco Bay area.

About 1,500 homes and commercial buildings have been destroyed throughout the region according to Ken Pimlott, director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

6.00am: Total of 25 wildfires reported

Wildfires covering 73,000acres have been reported in northern California.

The out-of-control blazes are being fanned by a weather phenomenon known as the Santa Ana winds, which blast hot, dry air across the state.
