Portugal wild fire footage reveals ‘fire devil’ tornado of flames ripping through forest

he astonishing images were caught as a string of wildfires broke out in the country due to soaring temperatures.

Footage of one blaze in the small town of Arganil showed a blazing whirlwind rising up from the flames.

The phenomenon is popularly branded a fire devil or fire whirl and can last for an hour or more, generating wind speeds of over 100mph.

They are caused when dust and flames are caught by the wind, spiralling around a core of ash to appear like a fire tornado.

People unlucky enough to be caught up by the blazing vortex can be burned alive as the whirl incinerates everything in its path.

The extremely rare sight was captured by a crew from national broadcaster TVI on Saturday evening.

It showed the devil spiralling up into sky above the flames surrounded by thick smoke.

Portugal, which suffers dry summer months alongside sky-high temperatures, has been ravaged by a host of wildfires this year.

On Sunday, about 1,000 fire fighters were needed to battle five large blazes around the country.

In June, 64 people died in raging forest fires, including several motorists trapped on a burning bridge.

That tragedy was branded Portugal’s worst fire tragedy in living memory.

The Civil Protection Agency said one day in August saw 268 separate fires – a record for 2017.

Portugal was forced to ask the EU for help as the blazes reached their peak.

The SOS was sent out to draft in more fire crews and aeroplanes equipped to douse the blazes.
