It is the first time in seven years the Twins have reached the postseason while the Yankees have not progressed past the wild-card game since 2012 when they lost the League Championship Series to the Detroit Tigers.
Neither side were expected to reach the postseason this year with New York undergoing a rebuilding process while Minnesota were the worst team in baseball with a terrible 59-103 record.
The Yankees won the regular season series 4-2, including a three-game sweep last month.
And the Twins have had a torrid record against New York both in the regular season and the playoffs dating back to 2003.
However, playoff baseball has sprung up many surprises in the past, none more so than last year when the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series since 1908.
