Worn against such a plain dress, May must have known her bracelet would catch attention – but was she sending a secret message?
Frida Kahlo’s work explored questions of identity, gender, class and race in Mexican society.
She is also considered a feminist icon by many thanks to her outspoken views.
May could have been trying to make it clear she is also a strong and outspoken woman as she leads Britain through Brexit negotiations.
Twitter went wild for the British Prime Minister’s fashion choice, with most slamming her.
One wrote: “Never mind the coughing fit – is May wearing a Frida Kahlo bracelet? Ruined forever.”
Another said: “Is that, is that, oh god, is that Frida Kahlo on her bracelet? No it can’t be? What is happening? Friday Kahlo?”
Much of May’s speech has caught attention for reasons other than what she said.
The Prime Minster suffered an unfortunate coughing fit while she was speaking, struggling to deliver her message.
Members of the audience showed pity as they strung out applause allowing Mrs May’s voice to recover.
Chancellor Philip Hammond even handed the Prime Minister a cough sweet during the awkward ordeal.
But the embarrassment didn’t stop there, as a prankster interrupted May to hand her a P45.
Footage shows the man, comedy character Lee Nelson, attempting to hand the P45 to the Prime Minister.
He was then escorted out of the conference hall.
