Chelsea News: Alvaro Morata injury may not be as bad as first feared

The striker flew back to England yesterday after pulling out of Spain’s squad for their games against Albania and Israel, after being diagnosed with a grade two hamstring injury by Spanish FA doctors, following an MRI scan.

Club doctors are yet to put a timescale on his return from injury but are hopeful it could be earlier than first predicted.

The normal recovery time for a grade two hamstring injury can be anywhere from between four to six weeks, but Chelsea doctors believe they can get him back quicker than that, after initial assessments on Tuesday.

Scans have revealed that Morata has a tear on the muscle, but proper treatment will not begin until later this week. Only then will a return date will become clearer – but the player himself, who has arrived at the club with a bang and scored seven goals in his last seven games, is optimistic.

Morata tweeted a picture of himself in Chelsea training kit with the message: “I have no time to lose! Working hard towards recovery! Crystal Palace.”

That tweet, however, was quickly deleted, it is felt that the Palace game, at Selhurst Park on October 14, could still come too quickly for the striker.

Chelsea play Roma twice in the Champions League during October, and also face Watford and Bournemouth in the league in that spell, before Manchester United visit Stamford Bridge on November 5.

Manager Antonio Conte had at first suggested that the injury to his star striker was not too serious after watching him limp off in the 35th minute of the defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, but admitted he had taken a gamble with the Spain striker.

His only cover while Morata is absent is Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi.
